Synergistic Effect - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
Synergistic effects are nonlinear cumulative effects of two active ingredients with similar or related outcomes of their different activities, or active ingredients with sequential or supplemental activities. For example, vitamin E is an antioxidant and vitamin C may help to recycle oxidized vitamin E into active vitamin E, thus, a synergistic [10] effect may be possible between the two.

Also, they contain nutritionally valuable minerals like Cu, Se, Zn, and Fe. CVE showed higher antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities than GLE in most of the studied parameters. The combination between CVE and GLE exhibited highly synergistic effects in most of the examined antioxidant and anti-inflammatory parameters.

Synergistic Antimicrobial Activities of Natural Essential
The synergistic antimicrobial activities of three natural essential oils (i.e., clove bud oil, cinnamon oil, and star anise oil) with chitosan films were investigated. Cinnamon oil had the best antimicrobial activity among three oils against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergillus oryzae, and Penicillium digitatum. The chitosan solution exhibited good inhibitory effects on the above bacteria except the fungi, whereas chitosan film had no remarkable antimicrobial activity.

Chemical and molecular mechanisms of antioxidants
In the presence of antioxidants, the antioxidant first inhibits the formation of linoleic acid hydroperoxides by scav- enging peroxide and ·OH radicals and also inhibits the formation of the colour indicator methylene blue by reduction of the linoleic acid hydroperoxide to the linoleic acid hydroxide.
