Biodegradation and flushing of MBT wastes (Journal Article

This paper presents the results of laboratory experiments on two different MBT waste residues, carried out to investigate the remaining potential for the generation of greenhouse gases and the flushing of contaminants from these materials when landfilled. The potential for gas generation was found to be between 8% and 20% of that for raw MSW.

Mechanical–biological treatment (MBT) processes are increasingly being adopted as a means of diverting biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) from landfill, for example to comply with the EU Landfill Directive. However, there is considerable uncertainty concerning the residual pollution potential of such wastes.

Initial Transformations in the Biodegradation

The isolate was identified as a Rhodococcus erythropolis strain and also degraded 2-hydroxybenzothiazole (OBT) and benzothiazole (BT), but not MBT, which was found to inhibit the biodegradation of OBT, BT, and BTSO 3. In anaerobic resting cell assays, BTSO 3 was transformed into OBT in stoichiometric amounts. Under aerobic conditions, OBT was observed as an intermediate in BT breakdown and an unknown compound transiently accumulated in several assays.

Settlement Characteristics of Mechanically Biologically

This paper presents the results of a detailed study of the degradation and settlement characteristics of two such MBT waste residues. The effects of mechanical creep and biodegradation are quantified separately, and compared with each other and with those for raw (untreated) MSW.

Effectiveness of aerobic pretreatment of municipal solid

Abstract. The waste mass decreased by about 8% to 27% compared to untreated MSW, indicative that even more MSW could be placed in the same landfill. The study confirmed the effectiveness of aerobic pretreatment of MSW prior to landfilling on reducing lag phase and accelerating biogas generation.

Management of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Leachate: A

Open dumping of municipal solid waste is a common method of waste disposal in developing countries, thus leading to pollution by gaseous emissions and landfill leachate discharge.
