Reclamation and recycling of waste rubber - ScienceDirect
An environmentally friendly process was developed for recycling rubber waste materials such as waste tires to generate valuable fuels or chemical feedstocks in a closed oxidation process which is free of hazardous emissions. The process involves breakdown of rubber polymer materials by selective oxidation decoupling of C–C, C–S and S–S bonds by water as a solvent at or near its supercritical condition.

Zhang and Tzoganakis (2004) analyzed the use of scCO 2 in the extrusion devulcanization process for recycling waste tire rubber. It was found that the feeding flow rate affects the devulcanization degree and influences the viscosity and processability of the treated material.

Thermo-mechanical devulcanization and recycling of rubber
This work is focused on the recycling of natural rubber industry waste by means of thermo-mechanical devulcanization. With that aim, tests were carried out in an industrial twin-screw extruder, at different barrel temperatures, ranging from 80 to 220 °C.

The particle size of rubber crumb employed in virtually all known methods for recycling of waste rubbers, in particular pyrolysis or devulcanisation, is usually less than about 1 mm . Besides, fine milling of tyre rubbers is required to separate fibre and steel wire from rubber.

Thus, the waste rubber management becomes very important. Incineration, pyrolysis, landfill or reclamation (alias regeneration) (Fang et al., 2001, Jansen and Stevels, 2006, Thomas and Gupta, 2016), etc are some regular disposal processes to manage the waste rubber.
