Squeak comes from rubber boot where steering column passed through from cabin to engine compartment. Squeak sound come from inside the cabin and only occurs when car is cold any wheel is turned while stopped or moving slowly. Spraying wd-40 on the boot stopped the noise problem for about 6 months. Have to spray again.

Have some one move the steering from side to side, you will see how the boot stays in place , but the metal shaft rotates in the end of the boot. Mercedes supplies these boots with silicon lubricant in the last 'rung' on the boot to prevent the squeak. You will have to replenish the seal with some type of lubricant. Try copper grease if there's no silicon base about.

13.Lower the rear of the cradle and remove the outer steering column seal. 14.Install the outer steering column seal. 15.Raise the rear cradle and install the rear cradle bolts. 16.Tighten the front cradle bolts. Refer to SI for torque specifications. 17.Install the left and right steering knuckle bolts. Refer to SI for torque specifications.

Remove the electronic power steering harness bolts (if equipped). Disconnect the left and right steering knuckle bolts and discard. Remove the rear cradle bolts. Loosen the front cradle bolts just enough to get clearance of the steering shaft. Lower the rear of the cradle and remove the outer steering column seal. Install the outer steering column seal.

The steering was squealing like a pig, until this afternoon when I decided enough was enough and I'd get down and fix it. Here's the cause..... As you can see, the metal ring/grommet/bearing, whatever you want to call it pops out from under the rubber boot and then this allows the column to rub against it causing the squeaking.
